Pentecost: Dive Deeper
Experience the unique and heart-stopping land diving ceremony of South Pentecost, then take time to explore and understand this mysterious region with your Vanuatu Ecotours escort.
3 days/ 2 nights
Naghol, the unique land-diving ceremony of South Pentecost (and the inspiration for the modern sport of bungee jumping), takes place every Saturday from April to June.
Vanuatu Ecotours is Vanuatu’s outer island expert and this small group tour (8 persons maximum) is designed for those who want to better understand the cultural practices of the land-diving tribes, and who want to explore the remote South Pentecost region.
After an early start on Saturday to catch the Air Vanuatu flight to Lonorore, we transfer straight to the land diving tower to witness the heart-stopping naghol ceremony. You will be amazed at what Lonely Planet has described as ‘the most remarkable custom in all of Melanesia’! As the day trip visitors board their vehicles to go back to the airport, we head to a nearby coastal village to meet our local hosts and enjoy a buffet lunch. We spend the afternoon exploring the village, which is also an opportunity to meet and talk to some of the men who had dived from the tower in the morning. As the sun sets across the ocean, our hosts will prepare a traditional kava ceremony to formally welcome you to the village.
On Sunday we explore the natural beauty of the region through a half day trek, and is another chance to meet and engage with the communities who call this special place home. We conclude the day swimming and relaxing at the beach.
On Monday, our land diving friends will take us for a paddle in a traditional outrigger canoe, before the morning transfer to the airport for the Air Vanuatu flight back to Port Vila.
This tour will be escorted by one of the Vanuatu Ecotours bilingual tour guiding team, to ensure that your stay in South Pentecost is a safe and happy one, and to help answer the many questions that all visitors have after witnessing the naghol ceremony.
Your accommodation will be a traditional bamboo bungalow with single or double beds and mosquito nets; cold water shower and flush toilet available. Your meals will be home cooked with love by the village mamas using fresh organic produce from the gardens and the sea.
