Our Maskelynes Discovery tour is an unforgettable eco-adventure: a remote island experience that brings you in touch with the real Vanuatu.
A highlight of the tour is the opportunity to see and swim with dugongs. The Maskelynes is a global hotspot for dugongs (often referred to as sea cows) and it was these majestic creatures that inspired the mermaid legend. The local community has restricted local hunting of dugongs and Vanuatu Ecotours is proud to pioneer environmentally responsible tourism to support dugong conservation in the Maskelynes. This tour offers the unique opportunity for you to witness a large and healthy population of these elusive and mysterious marine mammals. All engagement with dugongs follows the guidelines provided by the Vanuatu Environmental Science Society and a copy of these guidelines will be provided to all visitors. It is very rare to not see any dugongs over the four days – and often you will encounter a school of ten to twenty dugongs! However, as wild animals, dugong encounters cannot, of course, be guaranteed.
The Maskelynes, as a remote archipelago of small islands, is also a hotspot of traditional maritime culture, and is one of the few places in the Pacific where sailing canoes are in daily use.
You will be hosted by a local family in an established bungalow on the edge of the lagoon. Bungalow accommodation includes mattresses and mosquito nets, and shared ablutions. Meals will be largely sourced from local gardens and the fishermen’s catch of the day, supplemented by some supplies provided by Vanuatu Ecotours.
Boat travel will be by local fibreglass boats (‘banana boats’) with lifejackets and ladder provided.

Airfares are a separate cost, approximately 30,000 VT per adult return.
